Some patients express concern about the prospect of fixing metal parts in the mouth. They cite fears, including abrasions, allergies, discomfort and pain. But most of these fears are actually unfounded. Read on to find out why:
Orthodontic appliances themselves do not damage the teeth or dental tissue. However, what can cause harm to your teeth is lack of proper hygiene.
Some people have cavities after orthodontic treatment. It’s important to remember that with a fixed appliance, brushing your teeth requires greater accuracy and diligence. Care should be taken to remove plaque from under the arches and around the brackets. The device is not a contraindication to hygienic procedures in the dental office – you can still receive sandblasting or descaling treatments after having one installed!
One side effect that can occur is decalcification, which manifests as brighter spots on the teeth. This can be prevented by ensuring proper mineralisation of the teeth. Use a toothpaste containing fluoride, and also ensure that your diet is providing your body with the ingredients necessary to rebuild the enamel. In addition to fluorine, these ingredients include: phosphorus, calcium, zinc, iron, vitamin D and vitamin A.
Orthodontic braces are designed to apply pressure to your teeth to move them. The part of the bone in which the tooth is embedded disappears, making room for it, and the part where it has remained until now is overgrown with bone tissue.
The patient may experience some degree of pain, but in the jaws more so than the teeth. This is especially true in the first few days of wearing the brace, as well as the first day after changing the bow to a “stronger” one. Discomfort can feel a little more intense when the patient is chewing, or clenching their teeth. However, this subsides when the body becomes accustomed to the brace.
There is no single answer to this question. It all depends on your malocclusion, the type of brace you choose, and your individual responsiveness to dental treatment. A standard assumption is that orthodontic treatment will lasts approximately 24 months. However, this time period may be shortened or prolonged depending on the aforementioned factors.
One thing is certain – regular visits to the orthodontist will help ensure that your treatment is completed in the shortest amount of time possible, and with the greatest success and safety.
